A few years ago I visited the daughter of a former SVRy engineer and obtained a photo copy of a 1913 wage agreement between SVRy's engineers and the rr. The rate of pay at that time was 4.00/ day for engineer in most classes of service, with work train service paying 3.75/ day. My guess is that the "washer" is just that based on pay scale. I wonder if if the person washing engines eventually moved up the food chain to hostler?
