An earlier post about the 487's firebox stirred me up a bit.
One of the interesting aspects of the C&TS is the lack of any knowledgeable commentary about the overall picture of “how things are going.” Much less any "official" detail or insight.
As a regular reader of the NGDF, the Goat, and the Ashpit, there are all kinds of bits and pieces of conflicting information, some bad, some good.
Negatives that come to mind include: Various employees have resigned, others may leave or retire. Perhaps there will be a crew shortage. The 487 has firebox problems. Snow may or may not be cleared from the line by opening day. There is no GM this year. Etc.
Positives include: Lots of track work. Four engines in good condition (maybe?). Last season revenue (but not ridership) was at an all time high, and fare box revenues covered operating costs for the first time since 2001 (is this true?). Current appropriations from Colorado and New Mexico seem to ensure more trackwork this year and next. The Friends are raising money to overhaul the 463.
But any overview from the Commission, CTSMC or the Friends is missing. It is a thundering silence. Net, net I think there is some good news, but it is hard to tell for sure. All we get are snipets out of context. Inquiring minds would like better answers.
