The old ROW varies from hay meadows to overgrown with large trees. In the winter a work crew cuts the trees and burns the brush while the the trunks and larger limbs are logged for fire wood or sawing. The ROW is cleared for the full width. After the clearing, the roadbed shows up well and is generally in fairly good shape. Before track laying, a contractor is hired to remove stumps and to regrade the roadbed. The clearing has been done well in advance of the track laying, but the grading is generally done for the work track laying that will be done in a year. Culverts are also replaced in advance of the track laying.
