In 1970, we took what was supposed to have been our only family trip to the west coast and the desert southwest.
I was 14. I recall Dad got so upset that a gallon of gas in Del Rio, Texas was over 50 cents per gallon. I also recall road maps that said that there were no services for 300 miles.
It was there that I saw a mile long train at one look in the scrub of west Texas. It was unlike the trees and forests and hills of either Georgia or Pennsylvania that I knew.
This was in June. The C&TS was September. Almost saw the Chama-Durango line before scrapping.
We entered Colorado from Wyoming and when through Walden. I did not know about the D&SL and thought it might have been the D&RGW narrow gauge
We drove through the mountains and came out at Colorado Springs and then headed for Kansas. So close and so far.
One other thing. I recall breakfast at a California chain (Sambos?) that had a steak and egg breakfast for 99 cents.

BTW - I still have my slide rule.
