The profile sheets also show a straight line representation of the alignment. According to these, and the plan sheets I have seen, the S.V. did use simple (circular) curves for most of it's line. Interestingly though, about a third of the way from Austin to Prairie City they suddenly began to spiral everything. The grades and alignment on this extension were as bad as anything on the line and speeds would necessarily have been very slow. Why they would suddenly feel the need for spiral curves is a bit of a mystery.
