I replace the whistle with a gate valve and a length of pipe. I use this to purge the air from the boiler. never use air during a hydro test. I pump up very slowly over about 15 minutes, to give everything a chance to even out, even with water it is a shock to the boiler changing pressure rapidly. we go to whatever pressue the inspector tells us to go to. While under pressure I try to use the opportunity to test staybolts. Afterwards I don't releive the pressure. I let it come down by itself.
