It’s the owner of the locomotive who decides if the headlight gets a visor, it doesn’t tie in with any particular brand.
I believe the main reason for mounting visors on headlights is to shelter the lenses from “black rain” from the stack. When this stuff runs down the lens, then gets baked on from the heat of the headlight itself, you can’t get it off with dynamite. The acid in it also etches the glass, reducing the efficiency of the headlight.
Lower mounted headlights on larger locomotives are easier to maintain. It sucks having to lie across a hot smokebox, hanging out over space in the dark trying to focus a high mounted headlight.
