The last time I talked to photo lab about scanning my pictures/negatives from Durango the man suggest the best quality would probably by having reprints in 5x7 or bigger and scanning them on a flatbed scanner.
Thor: Suggest you not accept this guy's word on this. To go from a neg, to a print, and then to a scan is not the way to go. Each additional generation reduces quality and you are dependent on the quality of the print. Sounds like he is trying to sell you prints.
Your best bet would be to scan your film with a dedicated film scanner even if you have to pay a lab to do it for you. You will never get as good quality from a desktop scanner as you can from a film scanner. I know of what I speak as I worked in Hewlett-Packard's scanner and digital camera division for 8 years and wrote two commerical books on scanning.
