Re: SVRy: How fast did they go?

Jim G is one of my historical mentors, so I have no doubt about the 50 mph. figure. I was more or less trying to find out what typical speed was when everyone's day was going ok, trains were on schedule etc. One can easily imagine a hogger widening out on the throttle on one of SVRy's racetrack sections to make up lost time. I think there may have also been a couple of straight stretches down in the valley outside Prairie City.If I get a chance I'll take a look at freight train speeds and post what I find. I did look at the speed of Train 2 with eng. 1 coupled to an RPO and a combine traveling between Prairie and Dixe where I have both a departure time leaving Prairie and arrival at the summit at Dixie. Train left Prairie at 10:20, arrived at Dixie at 11:10 for a run time of 50 minutes for the 12 miles making an average speed of 14.5mph. Actual speed would have been higher due to the time working through the 2 switchbacks. This seems pretty good for mogul with 2 relatively heavy cars up a ruling grade of over 3%.
