The new truck frames I saw were reproductions of the original passenger car trucks. As I recall they had an longitudinal equalizer bar that "hooks up" at each end and sits on top of the journal box.
You have an interesting point. Maybe someone familiar with Thyssen or whoever the current truck supplier can answer the question whether they were cast or forged. Usually when stressed parts are required there is a metallurgical issue of grain flow which when the part is formed in intricate shapes the grain flow follows the shape insuring strength. Could well be that these side frames are not that critical.
I should have looked closer and asked some questions but cruise ships operate on their schedules, not mine!! They were sitting on skids on the dock having been recently unloaded from a freighter. As I recall the wheel sets were not yet installed but they had a big "Thyssen" sticker on them.
