Remembering when....in my younger days when the DRGW was the real DRGW. I am the prisoner of a tremendous amount of nostalgia. I saw it was it when it was real. And there are a lot of powerful memories associated with those good old days. I was only 20 years old when I first visited Durango, and 30 years old when it was abandoned. During those ten years a lot of my vacation time was spend somewhere between Durango and Alamosa.
But at the same time I am enough of a professional railroader and businessman to understand the need for and inevitability of change.
So as I view today's C&TS is it with both great repeat great appreciation for what has been preserved, as well as a sensitivity, perhaps too much sensitivity, for the changes. It is a very emotional issue for me, in which the economics of reality conflict with the desire to see reality preserved and interpreted for future generations in an authenitic manner. And not just a Disneyesque interprestation of how the world should have been....but never really was.
