Very interesting post which clearly points out the staggering job we have in preserving the 194 pieces of equipment. Not to take a thing away from the commendable job that the FRIENDS are, and have been, doing, but I would like to raise the question: "Is it possbile, or practical to rely totally on the efforts of a volunteer group to carry the load?" I personally think that this may be unrealistic, and that the C&TS should consider having a paid full or partime workforce whose job it is to restore and/or stabilize historic artifacts and equipment.
This will mean significant money will have to come from somewhere. And considering the FRIENDS can't be on site full time during the limited good weather period, a dedicated historic preservation workforce could go a long way toward making the best use of the limited time available.
