Just got back from Argentina & a trip on the 251 mile long 75 CM gauge Old Patagonian Express, with their 1922 built Baldwin & Henshel 2-8-2s. That this line survives is amazing. The northern half, from Jacobacci to El Maiten, MAYBE sees 3 trains a year.
All was going well until our train split a swith coming into Norquinco station. Both 2-8-2s & the first four freight cars derailed, with one freight car flipping onto it's size. Luckily, no one was hurt and even more amazing, 18 hours later, one of the steam locos & remaining cars was in El Maiten, ready to continue south to Esquel.
I don't know how much longer this line can survive. Ride it while you can. Think of it as if the entire San Juan Extension was still in service with all the original equipment. IMHO, the greatest surviving NG steam railroad.
