John,
The whole thing about the quote of 300 miles ... is what caused me to go looking for a copy of the earlier edition of
The Story of Inyo. Immediately I went to the part about the railroad and found it quit different (shorter) from the later edition. For that matter the earlier book has a significant fewer pages that the 1933 one.
It will be interesting to hear what Gordon Chappell and David Myrick have to say about it.
From a recent re-reading of parts of Myrick's volume I, I can tell that he was reading the area newspapers. For he has used some of the small items that I found in my own reading. The work in Volume III is just wonderful and he has used some good resources.
I have been acquainted with Gorden for years through researching ng passenger car histories -- in fact, he may have started me off on that subject. I saw David Myrick once when he was at a signing party for the UNR reprints of volumes I & II at Nevada State RR Museum.
