Hi,
I want to make a trip to Colorado in 2002. I want to plan on two weeks. I'd like to do like I did in 1984 and take Amtrak out (assuming she's still running).
I have several options.
1) Atlanta-New Orlenes (overnight) then the tri-weekly Sunset to El Paso. Rental car from there.
2) Atlanta - Philly - Chicago- Denver
3) Atlanta - Philly - Chicago- Grand Junction
4) Atlanta - Philly - Chicago- Albequerque. Rental car from there.
5) Atlanta - Philly - Chicago- ??? (Pueblo maybe)
6) Atlanta - Dallas. Rental car from there. This is a proposed new Amtrak route off of the Cresent.
I'd like to visit C&TS, D&SNG, Georgetown, and Golden as far as railroading is concerned. If I come from Albequerque, I'll visit Los Alamos. A nice to do would be Amtrak Denver-Grand Junction (I tried once from Denver to Salt Lake and was on the first train rerouted over UP due to flooding in 1984).
How are the Amtrak stations in the areas, rental car availability, drive times, road conditions, etc.
Any info would be appreciated.
Do you think Amtrak could be talked into a stub run from Pueblo to Alamosa?
