I have always been told top speed on a steam locomotive was determined by driver diameter times 1.5.
On the 844 this figures 120mph. Kindig claimed that the 800's could due a 130 across Nebraska.
For the record, I rode behind the 844(4) on the race track north of Larimie Wy. at 106 mph by stop watch, and 19 cars. June 1967 RMRRC trip to Rawlins. Keith G.
