Hi everyone! This is my first official forum topic I’ve initiated.
I was wondering what are the operating characteristics of the three main classes of geared locomotives (Shay, Climax, and Heisler), as in what duties they are best individually suited for, such as switching, woods runs, mainline running. I already know that Heislers are fast, and Shays are the best for maintenance, since I’ve been a geared locomotive fanatic for as long as I can remember. I am asking this in the context of if a logging company had comparable examples (i.e, similar in weight and power output) of all three of the major types on their roster. Think of it like if a company had 90-ton examples of all three; what would each be used for, and why.
I am curious to know this since no major logging operation (that I know of) had examples of all three types on their active roster at the same time.
I know this kind of turned into a brain exercise, so I look forward to seeing your responses on how you would structure operations. Feel free to include rod locomotives, even Mallets, into the mix as well.
