I used to heat a can of vienna sausages on top of the backhead as we were heading for Osier. I learned to vent the cans when one of them got too hot and blew its top. At first I thought I had run over a torpedo, but then the fragrance of the sausages sank in. When I investigated, the little can was still sitting right where it was supposed to be, but it was completely empty! All we could figure out was that the sausages had gone straight up through the roof vent - there was nothing left in the cab but the aroma.

Back in 1970, engineer Sid McKinney used to bake potatoes on the backhead. He would wind bacon around the potato, and wrap the whole thing in foil. Then he would nestle the potato on top of the backhead next to a hot pipe from the turret. After about an hour or so, you would start smelling the bacon, and know that lunch was ready.
