Thanks, John -
The scanner is a refurbished NIKON Super Coolscan 9000 - sharper than my old CanoScan 9500,
and much sharper than the EPSON V600 that (mistakenly?) replaced it a couple of years ago.
Here's a comparison of partial images from the CANON scan done several years ago, an EPSON V600 scan done two days ago, and the NIKON scan done last week. I don't remember the resolution at which the CANON image was scanned; probably a nominal 4800 dpi, as the image was 6600 pixels wide. the EPSON scan was done at a nominal 9600 dpi (a 12800 dpi setting was available, but this clearly involves software interpretation and does not reflect the true optical capability of the scanner.) The NIKON scan was done at a nominal 4000 dpi, which is very close to the actual optical resolution of the NIKON according to some laboratory tests
:*
The enlargement of the CANON detail here is exactly 900 pixels wide from the original scan file, the other two were cropped to show the same part of the image but do not represent the same number of pixels in the scan files
:
Note that the above comparisons reflect ONLY my own ex-Sperry-ments with these three scanners in an ordinary home office, and do NOT represent the results that might be obtained by a more skillful user under carefully controlled conditions.
I did find one more image taken at Phantom Curve, but IMHO the one posted previously is a more interesting composition

* Thanks to Jim Gunning's excellent posts on the thread starting with [
ngdiscussion.net] I was able to locate the results of what IMHO are some very reliable evaluations of the capabilities of most of the scanners currently available, including several such as the NIKON COOLSCAN 9000 that are no longer being manufactured - see [
