Hi, Greg -

Ernie sent me another batch of negatives a few days ago, and I've nearly burned out my scanner – not to mention what little is left of my feeble brain – over the weekend.  Whereas I was focused mainly on getting dramatic photos of the locomotives during those two days, Ernie was busy documenting the whole enchilada, and got several photos of the two bulkhead flats with their loads of wallboard.  While I was chasing #483 and #484 westbound from Alamosa to Chama on August 28, he followed #498 eastbound from Durango, but on the 29th Ernie chased #483 a short way west out of town before joining the gang following #498 and #484 up the hill.  Here's #483 with your two loads of wallboard just a couple of miles out of town:

Much later in the day, he caught "your" wallboard crossing Highway 160 as the train started its long descent down Bocea Hill into Durango:

For two more of Ernie's beautiful photos from 08/29/68 that feature the two loads of wallboard, see [ngdiscussion.net] and [ngdiscussion.net].

Except for the Silverton Train, the D&RGW narrow gauge was quiet on Friday, August 30, but on Saturday #483 pulled the last steam-powered regular* revenue freight on an American class-one railroad, a round trip to deliver loads to Aztec & Farmington and bring empties back to Durango.  Here's the southbound train a short way out of Durango:
