I seem to recall that there is a photo on DPL that shows 498 and 499 doubleheaded in 1939. 499 has speed lettering, 498 does not.

The other thing of note in the picture is that the consist is largely pipe gons and idlers somewhere West of Salida.

If the date is to be believed, 499 was one of the first to receive the new scheme.

Wasn't this also when they started using 18" cab numerals?
