Lava loop

I stumbled across a pic I took a few years ago of the Lava loop and I was wondering if any work has been done in recent years to the roadbed and ties? My pic makes it look almost like the tracks were just laid down on the ground with minimal grading. It also looks like it is a bit steep in places. Anyone know how steep it gets?
