a gorgeous fall day on Sunday 9/30.
A few pics of DSP&P/C&S remains in the South Park most of which you folks are quiet familiar with:
Como Roundhouse, a ongoing resotration effort by its owner.
The Como Depot, which hasn't been touched since the last C&S train left in 1937. Somebody NEEDS to do something with this before is turns to dust.
The Pacfic Hotel. Now a resturant.
Originally the road into Como crossed the tracks just south of the depot. The crossbuck still stands - probably because the post is concrete.
South Of Como the South Park/C&S swung off the hill and crossed what is now US 285. Note there are still telegraph poles along the grade. This line was orginally part of the line to Alpine Tunnel and Gunnison, later part of the lonely branch that went to Alma.
South the Fairplay, the grade climbs toward Trout Creek Pass. This was part of the line to Gunnison, abandoned in 1910 (and torn up in the 1920's?). It is amazing to see all the tires still in place on the grade, resting the same place they landed when the railwere pulled up 80+ years ago.
The famous overcrossing of the Colorado Midland and DSP&P at the summit of Trout Creek Pass. Midland went over the top and the South Park crossed under.
The location is right next to US 285. Here you can see where the DSP&P cut through the Midland fill. In the distance the highway does the same thing.
