The EBT has been "for sale" for quite some time. The current owners have yet to find a suitable buyer--by that I mean someone with the money to buy it--and more importantly maintain it. There have been offers from private individuals, government offers (with strings), and who knows what else, but none have yet to match the "criteria," whatever they are. Like anything, I'm certain these criteria may change as time progresses.
The future of the EBT has always been uncertain. As has been stated in the rypn forum, rumors of the EBT's "demise" come around almost annually, as nothing is ever guaranteed year to year by the management. Certainly the restoration work the FEBT is doing--not only in terms of restoring buildings, but restoring cars and fitting them for tourist service--would seem to indicate a desire by the current ownership to see to it that the railroad survives and is well cared for.
