I was on the train behind the speeder. It was a serious accident. The man on the motor car was airborne for a minimum of 8-10 feet. He was able to call for an ambulance on his own, but had several nasty, deep gashes that required many stitches. He had a very deep gash that exposed his skull. This came from a real railroader that I spoke with in Silverton Saturday afternoon. He had photos of the stitches on his cell phone. Not pleasant. The fellow was feeling no pain at that point. He was fortunate not to have been hurt worse.
Thankfully the car hit him on the right side of the speeder. The speeder was knocked on its side and basically demolished. This was an unprotected crossing south of the highway crossing at Hermosa. The woman in the mini-van knocked the speeder a good 10 feet off the tracks. Basically, she hit him from behind. She claimed to be going 5 mph.
