Let me put it this way they weren't out of service due to engine problems for 30% of the season. What I meant about ran fine was no major engine failure.
No, they didn't miss
30% of their runs through downtime. Instead they ran
less than 50% of their normal schedule, and it was an economic nightmare for the communities and the RR. And they ran with a locomotive far more appropriate to the task. I say again - things weren't "fine". The C&TS in that year was teetering on the brink of extinction, just as the Loop seems to be now.
Neither RR can run effectively with only one locomotive.
Look, we all understand the Loop has major, systemic problems. We all know the list of problems, as it's been stated and restated here ad nauseum. But the comparison you keep trying to make is wildly invalid, completely unfair to some hardworking people, and has little to do with what's really wrong - and that's all I'm trying to help you understand. There's no need to jump on the guys on the ground doing the daily maintenance and running by making claims that they should've been able to get through their season because "see, the C&TS did it once". Getting through the season running a full schedule with just #12 would've taken intervention by a major deity.
What happened, given the parameters the Loop operated under this year, was inevitable.
