Bill,

It depends on the area of the country.

Up here in Wyoming the main line is almost all wooden ties. There are a couple of small exceptions, but even when they replace turnouts they are still using wooden ties except at Como, Wyoming and the ties in the OS are concrete.

Must have something to do with deterioration vs cost.
