I was in Durango at that time in 2002 and I had a trip, over 3 separated parts, on the D&S. Durango - Hermosa behind steam (with a grandstand view of a helicopter water bombing a fire on the east side of the valley), Rockwood - Tacoma behind a diesel and finally on the railbus between Silverton & Elk Park. The D&S laid on a bus to join these points. I don't exactly the loss accumulated by the D&S that year, the C&T was closed by the USFS because of the fire risk and was very lucky to survive at all. As a result both lines had to put off lots of things they would have liked to have done.
Michael you are young and have an awful lot to learn. At your age everything appears so simple but you will learn - you could start by being less critical of things you know little or nothing about - such as locomotives in other countries as it annoys people, such as myself, who take a broader view. The railway was invented in another country............. >

Keep learning, most of the "grumpy old men" here are still learning.
