Thanks for the information. Actually, I have hiked over the top from the west portal before and may do it again when I visit the west portal. Having climbed most of the 14ers, high altitude hiking is not a problem. However, I wanted to see what the approach to the east portal was like, and hence my question. I take it from your response that you cannot drive beyond Hancock. Do you know how many miles it is from Hancock to the portal? I would expect the grade not to be overgrown and an easy hike--correct?
