Michael,

The old F units at the Colorado Railroad Museum were run into the ground in the 1970s and 1980s dragging heavy ballast trains over Tennessee Pass. After they gave up the ghost, they were allowed to rot in the Rio Grande's Burnham yards in Denver. When they finally made it to the CRRM, they required extensive replacement of badly rusted side sheets in order to cosmetically restore them.

Like all old locomotives, they could, I suppose, be made to run again if you threw enough money at them. Would that make any economic sense? I doubt it. Would the CRRM part with them? Even less likely.
