I would be in favor of historically-accurate replicas. These would be real steam engines. As far as the safety issues, steam locomotives are very safe as long as competent companies and crews operate them.
As the late Niel Vodden said, ``considering the number of engines operated and the number of miles run they are really quite safe.''
