The last time I rode there was a rockslide about the same location the day before. Both trains sat for hours until someone finally bit the bullet and made the decision. They backed up both trains, wyed and double-headed back to Durango. Dad went to the depot and stood in line that morning to get tickets, we were able to ride the second train. The riders from the trains that were turned had first dibs on tickets. I think the year was 1965.
That was the second slide on our vacation. Must have been a wet spring. We were in a string of about 50 vehicles trapped on a switchback on the old Red River Pass road. The road above us slid down onto the road ahead of us. We carefully moved rocks and dirt so we didn't start another slide and trap us again.
