The coke cars were almost exclusively used at Crested Butte where the CF&I had large coke ovens. The coke ovens were shut down by the CF&I in 1919 and the drop bottom gons were rebuilt in 1924 at Alamosa. They also used box cars and the ex-Crystal River Ingolsby dump cars to haul coke. The coke was very hard on wooden cars and that is one reason the CF&I shut it down.
