The Hallack & Howard Lbr. Co was a very old and large Denver Wholesaler. They controlled the Montezuma Lumber Co. at Glencoe, CO on the RGS from 1906 to 1914.
In 1914 they purchased a big block of federal timber and built a large mill in La Madera, NM. The D&RG built a 14 mile branch to connect the mill with the Chili Line. The H&H moved the MLCo. engine (#1) and equipment from Glencoe and then bought the C&S #46 (Cooke #1487) as #2. Then they bought another class 56 from the D&RG (#40) and 2 more C&S 2-8-0 (#39, #45) as H&H #, 4, #5. Then they bought a new Climax #1533 (#6) in 1919 and a second hand Climax #732 (#7) which they quickly sold to PLCo. at Dulce, NM. The C&S Consolidated were favored and they bought their final 2 in 1920 (#54, #48) which became #8 and #9..
The railroad during those years up to the late 1920s built three major lines west and north of La Madera, plus many spurs. Per the 1924 logging register, they cut 60,000 board feet a day, had 24 track miles, and ran two locomotives, fuel coal, hauling 46 log trucks and 6 flat cars. They also owned a caboose.
When they closed in 1927, some equipment was hauled away and H&H #4 is photographed on Cumbres Pass being towed west to an unknown location for unknown reason. It did not show up at McPhee.
The scraping date of the C&S engines in subject to review as there is little facts to confirm those dated. The Climax #6 later showed up in Idaho to operate the H&H new source of lumber at the Cascade Lumber Co.
The location of the old trackage lines are in NF woods, waiting for anyone to explore them and accurately map. This is something that has never been done by anyone of that company's line. If you like to explore abandoned railroad grades, this is a great unexplored system that needs to be measured and mapped for any new publication of this line's history. G
