Newspaper account to accompany Jimmy's report:
March 17, 1941, Monday
Narrow Gauge Lines Cleared by Rotaries
Snow blocked railroad lines in the mountain districts south and west of the San Luis Valley have been cleared by rotaries, according to an announcement made today by Chief Dispatcher W.S. Graham, and trains were expected to operate on time Monday.
The rotaries were operated over Cumbres Pass Sunday, one leaving Alamosa at 3:30am and arriving in Chama at 7pm and one leaving Chama at 4:30am and arriving at 6:30pm. The rotary from Chama found drifts twenty feet high west of Cumbres Pass. Trains operated over the line on schedule after the rotaries had cleared the snow out of the cuts. There were no through passenger or freight trains Saturday because of the blockade and the storm conditions.
The Santa Fe branch was opened at 10:45 am Monday by the rotary which left here at 5am. The mixed trains to and from Santa Fe, New Mexico were expected to make their schedule on time today.
