I got caught out by Lava loop myself once. It must be combination of the long ride down to Antonito, the temperature is warm, the engine needs very little coal, you're day dreaming about something else (probably the cutie on the open platform you saw while filling the tender at Sublette) and then suddenly you realize that there's no smoke out the stack and you haven't checked the fire in a while...
