Wade:
More anthracite coal was mined at Crested Butte than any place west of the Mississippi, so it would not be out of the ordinary to think that all the mines were anthracite. The coal from the Big Mine was mostly shipped to the steel mill at Pueblo. Anthracite coal from Floresta was shipped all the way to San Diego where the Navy used it to power naval ships in the late 1890s and early 1900s. Later anthracite was used in the smelters and a lot of it was shipped to Leadville, Salida, and to Kokomo. After the C&S took over the D&RG's Blue River branch (they swapped with the D&RG for the Baldwin and Pitkin branches), Crested Butte anthracite was shipped to Kokomo over the D&RG to Leadville in both D&RG and C&S ng cars.
It is a fascinating area and a part of the D&RG history that has not gotten enough attention (that is why I am writing the book).
