The CF&I Big Mine did not produce anthracite. There were other mines in the area that did: Floresta, Smith Hill, Peanut, the Pershing Mine, but the Big Mine was soft coal. D&RGW locomotives could not burn anthracite coal and the D&RGW locos took coal direclty from the CF&I Big Mine. I am writing a history of the Crested Butte branch and have been given a large collection of CF&I documents.
