Bob:
I have had a post card of this painting on my bulletin board for many years. I recall the original is at the Whitney in NYC. It is notable that Hopper--an artist with an eye for the industrial landscape--painted T-12 #177 during a visit to Santa Fe. I wonder if he was there visiting Mabel Dodge or Georgia O'Keffe? Did Hopper and/ or O'Keefe have the opportunity to take the Chile line back and forth in the direction of Taos?
Of related interest, I have also wondered how many of the early touristas traversed the RGS en route to Mesa Verde? Mancos was a handy station stop to get to the Mesa, and no doubt much of the booty that is now in Sweeden started the journey east over narrow gauge rails....
This is a particularly fine rendering of the locomotive, nicely done for a water color (though I suspect some of you might find the painting a bit loose). Note also the GREEN BOILER JACKET!
