The RGS Story Volume 8 has a chapter on saw mill and ties cutting. The hand cut ties were preferred as they were the heart wood by design and got a higher price than sawmill cut ties. Many sawmill ties were rejected as not heart wood as paid for and rejected, even after delivery.
When Lizard Head snow shed burned, several cars load of new Montezuma Lumber Co. ties were destroyed, and they were not paid full price as they had not been inspected and approved as yet. The MLCo. ate the difference.
