Hand Cut Ties 1880

looking for any information of references to how "Tie Cutter" made ties for the Railroads. My understanding is that they selected 6 to 8 inch trees felled them and debranched, then curt to 7ft lengths with an ax and flattened two sides with and adz. any Dimendsions?
