Typically empty flats would be traveling to Bates. I just consulted a copy of the plot map of the Whitney ROW and the bay window side of the depot faces the main such that going away from the photographer would be headed to Bates. This kinda would make you think that the engine is out there in the distance, but never say never. When I saw this photo last week, I thought I had seen another SVRy photo with a semaphor. I spent some time looking and couldn't find it, was gone for a few days and took another look. This photo is of the Sumpter depot. You can see the signal over the roof. It is perpendicular to the track in front of the depot which might seem odd, but the depot sat in the middle of the wye, so presumably this orientation gave crews more time to plan a response to the signal as they would view it as they passed the east switch moving around the curve.
