From the Trainorders.com website comes word that six steam locomotives in Eureka, CA are in danger of being scrapped.
The locomotives of the Timber Heritage Association are on property that has recently come under new ownership. The new owner has given the Association until December 31, 2006 to get the equipment off the property or the scrapper's torch will go to work.
Some of the smaller artifacts are in the process of being moved, but it is reported that the equipment to move 90-ton locomotives will have to come from Stockton at a cost of $30,000 which the Association just doesn't have at the moment.
Locomotives to be moved include two Shays, three rod engines, and one Heisler converted to diesel power.
Here are a couple of links to the THA’s story and to an article in the “Eureka Reporter”.
