You are probably right. He was kind of a hyper young guy, but we were all young then. My younger brother was somewhat in awe of this guy working with steam, and Mike somehow persuaded him to shovel out a bunch of ashes from the Chama ashpit!!!

On our first trip my folks had a 1969 Dodge Monaco, and we tore off the header trying to cross the crossing(if you could call it that), someplace east of Sublette. We had to hold-up at a tiny little Antonito motel for several days while the dealership in Alamosa got the part trucked in. It was on the opposite side of the highway from the C&TS area, and I remember my dad spent $12.00 a night. NO AC if I remember correctly. My mom was less than thrilled!!!
The second trip in late summer(before college started in the fall) was 4 of us, and we stayed in Chama and camped mostly except for one or two nights at the cheap Y Motel. Had my first COORS that trip after some spicy Mexican Tacos or some such thing we got on the fly! We rented a u-haul open trailer and took a Honda 350 and a 305 with us. There were gas wars in Kansas, and got gas for as little as 19 cents a gallon. I remmeber we passed on 22 cents and drove to another exit!!!
That whole trip in 1971 which was two weeks cost me $100.00 total including gas and food, etc.
In 1972 we did a month in Europe for $500.00 including Airfare, rental car, and motels. Boy those were the days of cheap railfaning.
