I was there twice in 1971, once with my parents during the summer, probably June, but it was close to the beginning. As I remember it was 484 which ran to Sublette, part of which was tender-first of course. This train started in Antonito.
I seem to recall fall trips that ran from Chama to Antonito, but we also rode a Chama to Cumbres RT for $10.00 which was fun. I have movies of some of this as well as slides.
One trip out of Antonito, the fireman(a California guy named Mike), yelled at us from the cab as we paced the 484 out of Antonito and asked
"How fast are we going" I think the answer was 20 mph!!
Also in one of my movie scenes of this train leaving Antonito you can see the brakeman with his club walking the top of the cars(ex freight cars converted to passenger cars).
During the fall trip we camped at Kelly's campground and one day took two motocycles and a car into Osier. Almost didn;t get out as it was a drizzly day and the road was slick(Labor Day time frame).
I also have some movies of riding toward Osier from Chama and the train chasing cows in front of the train.
I also remember seeing a bunch of freight cars in Alamosa along the old Valley Line, since the main highway from the east(over La Veta) crossed the tracks on the east side of Alamosa. I also remember seeing some east of the yard as you looked south from that same highway crossing. There were dozens of NG cars at that time.
