Yeh Matt I noticed the difference which is striking. The #1000 series boxcars were in 2 different sizes being 25' long, 10'5" high and 7'6" wide and some being 28' long, 10'5" high and 8' wide.
The #1100 series boxcars were 27'6" long 10'5" high and 7'8" wide.
The 1400, 1600 and 1300 series boxcars were 36'long either 7'8" or 8' wide and 11-11'9" high.
The Refers were 27' long, 7'6" wide and 10'5" high.
Except Refer #2 after being rebuilt 4/9/19 it was increased to 30'long, 7'6" wide and 11'high.
The front car looks wider than the 2nd box, so I'd guess it isn't the #2 Reefer as it was about the same width as the smaller boxcars. I'd guess then that the large front car would be one of the 1400, or 1600 cars as the 1300's were 11' high which wouldn't be such a striking difference that the 10'5" high cars. The 2nd box could certainly be a reefer except of course it is winter and the need to keep anything cold would not be an issue. I don't know if they used the insulated cars in wintertime to keep things from freezing.
Did rr's in general use a heat source in insulated box cars to safegaurd goods that would have been damaged by freezing?
