Mal's next paragraph is:
"At this same time, the SV sold to the Army the following cabooses:
SV Cabooses: #3 sold 7/28/43 to U.S.A. and destroyed in roundhouse fire of May 11, 1946.
#4 sold 7/28/43 to U.S.A., not used by WP&Y and sold as a[n] outbuilding in Skagway. Ala. [sic]"
How does this fit with your information?
The Army take over of the White Pass occurred late in 1942. Bruce Prior has on his website (http://narrowmind.railfan.net/WPYR/records/FinalReport1946.PDF) a pdf of a company letter at the end of the lease explaining the settlement to the London office. That letter states:
"When the Army took over the railway it was intended that an inventory should be taken. However, between the time that they arrived September 15th 1942 and October 1st 1942 the commencement date, they had removed so much material without records that we refused at that late date to accept an inventory and insisted on settlement on our book value."
The August 1942 date is prior to the Army take over. The WP folio drawing does not indicate that the cars are/were USA.
I recall discussion in the White Pass email group about the purchase dates of the Tweetsie ten-wheelers and maybe some other other locomotives and who they were bought by. Don't recall what the out come was.
