For anyone who might be interested in this sort of thing, Here is a drawing I've compiled that shows the telegraph wires on the D&RG 4th division
circa 1923, prior to installation of the dispatchers telephone system, which was done just prior to WW2 (1938-39 time frame). The office names and their telegraph wire calls are shown as well.
The RR message wires 3 and 9 (later renumbered 103 and 109 by Western Union) were taken out of Morse service, paired and transposed for voice frequency transmission and used for the DS telephone circuit all the way thru to Durango. All the wires were No. 8 BWG
galvanized iron, originally.
The Valley line, Silverton, Creede and Farmington branches never had telephone circuits, except for a few places where telegraphones were in use on certain sections, and these used the existing telegraph wires as conductors worked against ground.
