In case anyone is interested, or cares, the photo of the 480 at Round Hill, shows the three wires that were on the trackside telegraph pole line.
These were all Morse wires. Research has turned up the following information:
No. 1 Dispatcher's wire Salida to Alamosa.
No. 5 RR message wire Denver-Pueblo-Salida to Alamosa.
No. 118 Western Union wire: Pueblo-Salida-Alamosa
MonteVista-Del Norte-Wagon Wheel Gap-Creede.
From surviving polehead diagrams and old timetable information, the No. 5 Message wire looped east to LaVeta through Blanca and Ft.Garland, then back to Alamosa. It did not show on polehead diagrams east of LaVeta.
After the valley line was taken up, The Western Union Morse wire 118 remained in service from Alamosa to Creede, later terminating at Del Norte after the WWG and Creede depot offices were closed.
It was still in use when I worked for the D&RGW Communications Dept in 1965-1973.
