Mike,
As I recall the first train of the year was a pipe train with the two K28's number 478 and 476 from Alamosa to Durango. They doubleheaded all the way if I recall. I believe Jeff Stebbins among others shot this train. It was right after this apparently that we showed up, and found that a train had been operated out of Alamosa. As it was just after school was out this was the earliest my family could get out there. Thus we drove to Durango and started there with the Farmington turn, then wound up back in Alamosa 3 days later.
Back to the coaches. There may have been some coaches on the last run in December of 1968. I have seen pictures of this train, but do not remember off hand. Wasn't this the 473 and 483 doubleheader, with 481 dead in the consist which was taken to Durango? Later the 483 would run the National Park train from Durango to Alamosa.
Earl has a lot of info on these moves in 67-68 so he could probably clear this up real fast.
